Duck Soup Recipe for Ferrets

  • 1 whole roasting chicken, cooked
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Ferretone (or whatever vitamin supplement you use)
  • 1 Cup ferret, mink or high-grade cat kibble
  • 2 Tablespoons fine bran OR whole oats OR Metamucil
  • 3 or 4 Eggshells
  • 4 Tablespoons honey
  • 1 Cup fat trimmings, uncooked

Cook chicken by placing the entire thing in the crockpot, adding enough water to cover and then cooking on high 6-8 hours by which time the meat will be completely falling off the bone. Drain liquid from pot, but reserve for later. Every part of the chicken will be used. Discard nothing. Add meat, bones, fat, skin, even giblets if you cooked them to the blender. If your blender jar is small, or your blender is one of the less powerful type you may need to blend this in several batches.

Add chicken parts plus other ingredients above to the blender jar along with some of the reserved cooking liquid. Blend until smooth, adding additional liquid if necessary. If in doubt as to whether all bones have completely blended, then blend again. You don’t want to leave any small bones behind which could get caught in a ferrets throat.

Freeze in ice cube trays or other small containers which allow for individual portions to be removed and fed.
